What are direct and indirect identifiers?
What is a direct identifier?
Direct identifiers include information that relates specifically to an individual and can be used in isolation to uniquely identify an individual. Examples of direct identifiers include social security number, full name, email address, telephone numbers, health insurance number, medical record number, full face photographs, or biometric record such as fingerprints.
What is an indirect identifier?
Indirect identifiers include information that can be combined with other information to identify specific individuals, including, for example, a combination of gender, birth date, geographic indicator and other descriptors.
