How do I learn about the requirements of federal privacy law (HIPAA et al)?

To get started, we recommend the HIPS training series, as well as our collection of awareness topics.

Alternatively, you can take a walk through the encyclopedia, moving from topic to topic as your interest requires. You can also take our guided Privacy Rule tour or Security Rule tour.

Note that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) maintains an extensive collection of FAQs. This collection can be filtered to FAQs related to HIPAA.

How do I learn about the privacy requirements of state law?

In the case of Florida, you can look at our various encyclopedia entries for that state. For other states, consult with local resources like your state department of health, state medical associations, etc.

Where can I find statute and regulation text?

We've collected links to federal statutes and regulations in our web resources section. And encyclopedia entries usually contain direct links to the sections of statutes or regulations to which they refer.

Most states have online collections of their statutes and regulations. In the case of Florida, see the online Florida statutes or online Florida administrative code.

Can I ask for information or advice from you?

We do our best to answer all questions sent to us. Please remember that, as our disclaimer notes, this is an educational site. We are educators, and the information we provide is for educational purposes. We do not and cannot provide professional advice, such as legal advice.
