autonomy, principle of

The ethical principle of respect for persons, and of individual self-determination consistent with that principle. Human freedom of action generally is grounded in the principle of autonomy -- consistent with the nature and dignity of human beings.

Attention to autonomy underlies privacy and confidentiality concerns. Respect for individuals includes respect for individual preferences about information collection, use and (re)disclosure.
