Bluetooth
A wireless communications
specification primarily intended for very short range links
among digital devices, especially mobile phones, PDAs and
laptops. Bluetooth operates in the same 2.4-Ghz radio frequency
band as 802.11b Wi-Fi, but its range
is limited to tens of feet.
As with other wireless
protocols, Bluetooth includes security features to prevent
interception of communication by third parties, but these
are usually turned off by default. Security measures are primarily
designed to prevent eavesdropping, but have the important
secondary benefit of preventing unauthorized connections to
one's wireless devices.
Bluetooth gets
its name from the Scandinavian engineers that developed the
specification. It honors Viking king Harald "Bluetooth"
Blåtand, who reigned from 940 to 985.
