National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) standards

National Council for Prescription Drug Program (NCPDP) standard transactions are used for pharmacy drug claims, eligibility and coordination of benefits. They were selected as part of the code set standard under HIPAA for the retail pharmacy environment (instead of the ANSI X12N 278 transaction format).

NCPDP transactions use NDC to code drugs and biologics. Outside the retail pharmacy environment, institutions and professionals more commonly use HCPCS to code drugs and biologics.
