National
Drug Codes (NDC)
National Drug Codes
(NDC) serve as product identifiers for human drugs. The current
edition of the National Drug Code Directory is limited to
prescription drugs and a few selected over-the-counter products.
NDC codes were
originally established as part of an out-of-hospital drug
reimbursement program under Medicare, and have since found
wider application.
NDC is a HIPAA
code standard for reporting drugs and biologics for retail
pharmacy transactions. (HIPAA regulations do not currently
prescribe a single standard code set for non-retail pharmacy
transactions. HCPCS is an
alternative.)
