portable computing devices

Few computer innovations have introduced more convenience than the development of portable computing devices, from laptops to personal digital assistants (PDA).

Unfortunately, the great virtue of these devices -- easily carried from place to place -- is also their greatest weakness. Loss or theft is a constant possibility.

The best practice is to keep sensitive information off such devices entirely. Failing that, devices should be password protected (as should sensitive files and directories on them). Physical security is obviously critical as well.

Users of portable devices should be made accountable in some way for organizational data on their systems, as an incentive to practice good security.
